This year is flying by quick! I can't believe it's the middle of March already. Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!
It's Reveal #5 for Art Jewelry Elements Earrings Challenge and I decided to light up the torch!
Week 9 ~ Sakura (Cherry Blossom) Earrings
For Week 9 I decided to kick start Spring by making sakura earrings. Visiting Japan during cherry blossom season was one of the most memorable experience and I still remember what a breathtaking view it was. I made the enameled flowers and threaded balled copper head pins which I used as a stem. By quenching the molten balled copper wire into the water, it creates the most beautiful dark pink color. I hammer textured the end to shape them into leaves which I wrapped around the stems.
Week 10 ~ Poppy Flower Earrings
For Week 10 I stayed with the spring flower theme and made poppy flower earrings. I played around with various color combinations to get the purple I wanted. Now if I can remember how to recreate the color... That's part of the fun when you are layering multiple enamel colors but when someone asks you to recreate one, it can be a challenge. I have a note pad handy at my enamel station but I often get carried away mixing a little bit of this and that. I really need to keep better notes!
Happy Spring everyone! Hop on over to all the other artists' blogs to see what they made for Reveal #5!

Beads of Clay Contest
I had a pretty productive day in the studio today and as I sat down to watch the History of the Eagles we recorded with a glass of wine, I came across Beads of Clay Contest. Beads of Clay Blog is the blog to follow if you are interested in ceramic/porcelain beads. It is home to many talented ceramic/porcelain bead artists you will see great tutorials, eye candy photos, must read articles, and beautiful jewelry created using ceramic and porcelain beads. I would love to learn how to make ceramic/porcelain beads one day but for now I'm going to leave them to the pros and be a collector :)
Last year I took an online class digital texturing class on Down and Dirty the Digital Way by Gail Schmidt on Creative Workshop and fell in love with digital layering and texturing on Photoshop Elements. This is an area of art I would like to further pursue. With the little knowledge I know about digital art, I thought I would give it a shot by creating a banner for BOC and enter their contest. So here it is!
Voting begins March 16 and runs through March 22 12pm EST. Please check out all the wonderful entries and cast your vote for your favorite banner here!

Art Jewelry Elements Earring Challenge Reveal #4!

I cut out copper rings using my trusted Swanstrom Disc Cutter, hammered and stamped "rescued" and "loved" with the paw print charms wire wrapped at the bottom. You can find more about Marti on Marti's Buttons n Beads Facebook page or follow her on Pinterest. You can shop for Marti's ceramic creations at her Etsy store.

What I love about metal etching is you can apply any design and it's quick and easy! I finished the earrings by wire wrapping large hole freshwater pearls. I think I'm going to make a variation of this design. So many possibilities and so little time!!
Here is my sweet fur child Kea. She sends lots of Aloha your way! Mahalo for visiting and hop on over to all the other creative artists below!

Art Jewelry Elements Earring Challenge Reveal #3!
AJE Week 4 ~ Walk on the Beach
I've been wanting to use Humblebeads since I met Heather Powers at Bead & Button Show last year. She is one of the nicest and talented people you will meet! Her booth was covered with her beautiful beads and it was really hard to choose which ones to bring home! The starfish charms caught my eyes immediately and I decided to incorporate them to Art Jewelry Elements Earring Challenge Week 4. I used some Hawaiian Beach glass with copper spacer beads on hammered 16g wire with sterling silver ear wires.
AJE Week 5 ~ Willowflowers
For week #5, I decided to use another one of my finds from Humblebeads. Simply love this hue of blue! It will go perfect with jeans :) I accented the stem with hammered copper beads and crystals onto sterling silver ear wires. The colors were perfect match!

AJE Week 6 ~ Love Always
I've been admiring J-Lynn Jewels tiles that others have been using and I had to get some myself! Had to squeeze in one more Valentine's theme earrings. I tried different design ideas but came back to my first one. I kept it simple not to take away from the message of the tiles. I knotted 1.5mm leather cords and hung them on sterling silver ear wires. Sometimes less is more :)

Bead Soup Exchanged!!
The long awaited suspense is over and both Donna Millard and I received each other's Bead Soups. I can't tell you how happy I am to be partnered with someone so talented and sweet like Donna! I actually yelped in joy seeing her package in the mailbox! I ran inside and opened the package carefully and OMG look what I got!
I am over the moon! The beads were packed in a beautiful pink striped pillow box. I unwrapped the carefully packed bubble wrap one by one. Wow! Donna created the flower beads because I live on the Garden Island, Kauai! The photos do not do justice to how beautiful the glass beads are! My head is swimming with all the design ideas with such gorgeous beads! I absolutely love the lavender and green color combo. The brass clasp and findings are perfect to use and goes perfect with the glass beads. I can't wait to get started!! Mahalo Nui Loa Donna!!!
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Now it's my turn to show you what I sent to Donna. With a talented lampwork artist as my partner, I decided to go all metal and wirework components made by me.
The focal was made with copper sheet which I textured and sawed out the keyhole, then patinaed the top layer. I stacked the two layers and riveted the four corners to add depth to the piece. This is a technique I learned from Julie Sanford at Bead & Button Show last year. I also created two smaller matching single layer pieces.
I made a fold formed leaf clasp and made a toggle out of copper wire. Included two more leaves just for fun! I decided to make wire coiled beads in two different sizes and also made some S links which were all made out of copper wire.
Added some leather cord to complete the soup and here is my Hawaiian Bead Soup to my fabulous Bead Soup 7 partner ~ Donna Millard!
Stay tuned to what we create on March 30!! Mahalo for stopping by!

I signed up once again for Lori Anderson's Bead Soup Blog Party! The 7th BSBP has over 500 participants and I will be in the 1st Reveal Group on March 30, 2013!
As I patiently waited for the email to find out who my partner will be this year, the Bead Soup God aka Lori Anderson has once again blessed me with yet another incredibly talented artist this year! I immediately recognized her name when I got the email. I've been drooling over all the incredible creations she's been posting on her Facebook page and her blog was so thrilled to be partnered with an amazingly talented lamp work and jewelry artist Donna Millard!!!
I immediately went to her website www.fyrebeadz.com and read her Bio. Check out her credentials!

AJE Earring Challenge Week 3 - Love Is In the Air
For Art Jewelry Elements Earring Challenge #3, I decided to go with another Valentine's Day inspired earrings. I used 16g copper wire which I balled and quenched the ends to get that bright beautiful deep pink colors. Formed the heart shape, attached red fresh water pearls and the cute copper heart charms I got from beadsandbabble on Etsy. Hammered the wire to add texture, applied liver of sulfur to bring out the contrast and ta da!

AJE Earring Challenge Week 2!
With Valentine's Day right around the corner I was in a mood to get some heart themed earrings made. I cut out hearts from 24g copper and enameled them with the grunge color theme. Wasn't sure how I was going to dress it up and I came up with an idea to hammer texture copper wire and file it to the shape of arrows. So here it is! Shoot That Arrow to My Heart Earrings!

Happy New Year 2013!
Been away with the fam for ski vacation to Snowmass, CO and away from the studio for 2 weeks. After the mad fury of the holiday season, it actually felt good to take a break.
I started off 2013 posting about Goal Setting on Artisan Whimsy for the Enameling Team. I wrote down my goals for 2013 on my iPhone and will be tracking my progress throughout the year.
While on vacation I was catching up on my favorite blogs and came across Art Jewelry Elements Earring Challenge. The first sentence immediately caught my attention-"Do you need a kick start for your creativity in 2013?" Yes I do! I was lucky enough to be one of the first 50 to sign up where we will be pinning new earrings on a weekly basis for 13 weeks. You can see all the wonderful work by so many talented people on AJE Pinterest Board. Mahalo AJE Team to get me off to a great start!
January 8th was a nerve wrecking day as it was the first day of Bead & Button Show sign up for classes/workshops. I put in for one of the Master's Class by Linda Darty but unfortunately I wasn't chosen by the lottery. I had a solid back up plan and successfully signed up for 12 classes! Yes, I'm crazy taking 12 classes in 7 days! Super excited to be taking classes from Richard Salley, Robyn Cornelius, Thomas Mann, Joe Silvera, Sherry Serafini, Chris Mode, Eva Sherman, Kaska Firor, and Susan Wade. This year my dear friend Julie won't be joining me but Heidi is going to be my partner in crime. I'm so excited to show her what I've been talking about the past couple of years! The biggest surprise came when I was stuck at San Francisco airport for a 4 hour layover. I decided to check out how the classes were filling out and if they've added more seats on two of the classes I didn't get in. I noticed they added another session for Linda Darty's Master Class. I was already on the wait list so I was accepted in! This was the icing on the cake! So much to look forward to and June can't come quick enough! We are so going to enjoy the Wisconsin Butter Burger together Heidi!!

Today was my first day back into my studio. My best friend's hubby made me the most incredible gift-Jeweler's Bench! I cried when I got it. It will be cherished for the rest of my life. With the help of my hubby we got it nicely tucked into my studio!
The biggest change was the height of the bench. It allowed me to work for hours without hunching over allowing me to pound, saw, dap, etc. without neck and shoulder pains. The bench will be one of my prized possession!
With the proper work bench it was such a breeze to make some of the things that's been in my head. Being deprived of pounding on metals for couple of weeks I decided to start the Art Jewelry Elements Earring Challenge with this Fold Formed Leaves Earrings :) Boy did it feel good to make some noise again in the studio!
Here I come 2013! Let the fun begin! Mahalo for stopping by!

Torch Fire Enameling ~ My Post on Artisan Whimsy!
I recently joined an awesome Ning group called Artisan Whimsy. The creators of the group are the administrators of Creative Bead Chat on Facebook. I love love love Creative Bead Chat as it's a great place to share ideas, ask questions, and form friendships. Artisan Whimsy is like Creative Bead Chat on steroids! The site is so well organized and currently there are 20 groups in different techniques/genre of jewelry making blog posts on a weekly basis. If you haven't visited the site yet, come join in on the fun we are having!
I joined the Enameling Group lead by Heather Marston and signed up to post about Torch Fire Enameling. I focused on the sifting method which I learned from one of my favorite teacher, Richard Salley.
Here is my mini tutorial I posted :)
*********************************************
Aloha from Kauai! I am super excited to share this blog with you! I am by no means an expert in this field but will humbly share my experience about torch fire enameling. I love working with metals and being able to add colors to metals was icing on the cake! I took Richard Salley’s Torch Fire Enameling class at Bead & Button Show in 2011 and fell in love with torch fire enameling! I will be sharing the sifting method of torch fire enameling as I am still a newbie to the immersion method taught by none other than one of my favorite teacher, Barbara Lewis.
One of the beauties about torch fire enameling is it requires minimal tools. Here is what you need to get started:
Enamel – Very important that you only use Lead-Free enamel for torch fire enameling. With Richard’s recommendation I purchased Thompson’s Complete Med Temp/Med Expansion 80 Mesh Enamels (169 colors!) which will give you 17g of each color. It’s a great way to determine which colors you like and experiment the different color combinations. This sampler pack will last you a long time for jewelry making. Another excellent one stop source is Barbara Lewis' Painting with Fire website! Barbara carries pretty much everything you will need for Torch Fire Enameling and her site is much easier to navigate and find what you need :)
Tripod – I recommend getting the 9 inch height so you have room for the torch head to go underneath. You will not be using the mesh that typically comes with the tripod. It’s a huge heat sink. I use the mesh to cool fired pieces.
Trivet – there are various sizes but you need get a trivet that will sit on top of the tripod. I use Thompson’s TPT-3 (2-3/4” d). I have several trivets in different sizes so that I can torch another piece while the other one is still cooling.
Sifter – different sizes available to provide different coverage and effect.

Cheap Pliers – I use cheap pliers to remove the trivet off the tripod. Don’t use your good pliers! Get flat nose (not chain nose) so that you have a stable grip. You don’t want the hot trivet to be tipping over.

MAPP Gas Torch with self igniting torch head – I got mine from Home Depot. It’s the yellow canister. MAPP gas is hotter than propane which will melt the glass faster. I like the torch head where I can turn the flame on an off by just pushing the button. (personal choice) MAPP vs. Propane? That will be another post J Don’t be afraid to use the torch! I have to admit I was scared of it at first but now I have 6 torches of different sizes with different fuels for various projects (officially a pyro!)
Holding Agent/Enamel Adhesive – You can use enamel holding agent like Klyr-Fire (dilute with water 50/50) or use a cheap liquid hair spray (I was told the cheaper the hairspray the higher the alcohol content which works great, i.e. White Rain) One thing to remember is to let the piece dry after you sift your enamel before firing. If you put too much holding agent and there is wet enamel, it will pop during firing and leave holes.
Safety Glasses – Always protect your eyes! Torch fire enameling is quick so I don’t use didymium glasses but you may want to get one if you plan on torching for long hours to protect your eyes.
Mask – I use the 3M 8212 N95 for soldering/welding. This may be overkill but I try to take every safety precautions. You are working with ground glass and whenever you are sifting or transferring enamel from one container to another, you should be wearing a mask to protect your lungs. Also it’s super important to wipe down the area with wet paper towel so that you are not sending enamel dust in the air. I keep my mask on until I’ve finished cleaning the work area.
Let’s get started!
Step 1: Clean your metal – Use mild detergent (like Dawn) and rinse off well. Scrub if necessary. The water should not repel from a clean surface. Dirty piece will cause enamel to pop or crack later.
Step 2: Lightly spray enamel adhesive on metal (back side first)

Step 3: Sift the backside with counter enamel. I place the little trivet (this is not the same trivet I use for firing) on top of old glossy magazine pages to collect enamels and pour it back to the container. Try to get an even coating. You can use a darker color enamel or mixture of all the left over. Heat the piece from the bottom and melt the enamel until you reach the orange peel texture look. Don’t over heat the counter enamel side as you will be applying the flame directly later when you are enameling the front side of the piece.
Let it cool (don’t quench in water as the shock will crack the glass)

That is when the glass is fully fused. If you want just one coat of color and you have good even coverage then stop here. In this picture I wanted only the bottom half enameled.
Step 5: This is where the fun begins! Layering different opaque and/or transparent colors. Color combinations are endless! Keep in mind transparent enamel requires a little longer to fuse than opaque colors. Wait for the surface to give you the even glossy look. It’s almost like watching solder flow.
Tips:
- If you are planning on layering multiple colors in the front, be sure to apply several layers of counter enamel. Otherwise, the front side will have more enamel than the back and the piece will curl.
- If you have holes, be sure to keep it unclogged with enamel. I use a toothpick.
- When re-torching a piece, heat it nice and slow. Give it enough distance and once the enamel starts to change color bring the torch closer. You are working with glass and you don’t want to temperature shock the piece.
- Don’t over heat the piece. You will have enamel pull away from the edges.
- Don’t put the torch too close to the piece. I have a tendency to bring the torch tip closer and closer to the piece and have to keep reminding myself there is a “sweet” spot where the flame is hotter.
- Keep your edges clean when you sift the enamel on. Otherwise, the piece will get stuck on the trivet.
- If you don’t like how the color turned out, layer with another. Some of my favorite pieces started out super ugly!
- Layering opaque over transparent enamel will cover over and mask the transparent underneath.
- Keep your work area clean
- Torch in a well ventilated place even if you are wearing a mask!
It’s so great to be part of this wonderful community. I’m looking forward to learning from you all! Mahalo for reading and happy torching everyone!
