Bead & Button Show and Rebranding!

Bead & Button Show
It's that time of the year again where I make my annual pilgrimage to Milwaukee to attend the Bead & Button Show!  My work peeps have absolutely no idea my excitement when I tell them about B&B but it's the event of the year for me!  This will be my third year attending and I have signed up for 12 workshops!  Yes I'm crazy but I don't have other opportunities to learn from the industry's best in person often so I have to make it worth every minute!

I'm starting off this year taking Linda Darty, yes THE Linda Darty of the enamel queen, Enameling Master Class!  What a way to kick off the event!  It is a 3 day in depth workshop and I am looking forwarding to learning various enameling techniques.  My jaw literally dropped when I learned Linda will be one of the Master Class teacher as I have admired her book The Art of Enameling for years and it's been my favorite bed side and studio reading.  I will be like a sponge and absorb as much as I can from the Master of Enameling!

I'm taking two classes from one of my favorite teacher, Richard Salley, this year.  I saw the Fire & Ice Pendant in last year's class and I had to wait an entire year to learn how!  Talk about keeping someone in suspense!  I'm also taking his Make the Impression class.  I love the primitive and rustic look it can achieve.  Right up my alley!  I hope to see his beautiful and kind assistant Martina Stein.  I just love her!

After moderate success with jeweler's saw, I decided it was time to learn from the master of sawing, Thomas Mann.  Francesca Watson was raving about his class so I decided I really need to master this technique.  I've also admired Thomas Mann's jewelry for years.  The way he uses cold connection is so ingenious.  Looking forward to learning two key techniques which I will use for years in future work!  Check out his beautiful work at his website Thomas Mann!

I took Joe Silvera's class two years ago and was blown away with the set up.  I walked into his class and there is a large monitor in the front and high quality tools on each table.  The monitor makes it so much easier to see the intricate techniques he is teaching when you have many in the class so everyone gets a great view.  I signed up for the Basket Prong class this year.  Being able to capture delicate stones without the standard bezel will add another option to set stones.  Looking forward to his gentle and thorough style workshop.  Visiting his jewelry school in Berkley is on my list!

This year's hottest workshops is being offered by Robyn Cornelius!   Almost all of her 11 workshops are sold out and most sold out within the first 10 min when registration first opened!  My partner in crime this year, Heidi Kingman, are taking this class together which I'm sure going to make it extra special.  I can't wait to apply my new sawing skills from Thomas Mann and Robyn to pierce such intricate designs and get the amazing colors through liver of sulfur!

Another class that sold out within minutes was Lisa Barth's Cross Wire Pendant.  I kept bugging the B&B peeps and when they added additional seats, I got in!  Yay!  I have long admired Lisa's metal clay and wire weaving jewelry.   I just love the way she combines copper and turquoise in her work.  I started a small collection of turquoise as it is my favorite stone.  I can't wait to learn how to capture these beautiful stones and showcase them in a pendant!

When I saw Sherry Serafini's bead embroidery display 2 years ago at Bead & Button Show Exhibit, her work literally stopped me in my tracks.  Her work is beyond amazing and they are mesmerizing.  Bead Embroidery is so opposite of what I normally do which involves hammering, soldering, torching, and wire wrapping.  Working with intricate teeny tiny seed beads is a bit intimidating.  This is going to be the most quiet class I will take this year! It will be like a meditation session and I will look forward to learning from the Master of bead embroidery!

I learned metal etching from the fabulous duo Cristina Leonard and Gail Lannum last year who taught me how to use ferric chloride etchant to etch beautiful designs on metals.  This year I signed up for John Fetvedt's Electro-Etched Copper Earrings.  It will be great to have an alternative non-chemical etching method under my belt.  John is known for his beautiful chainmaille work.

I met Eva Sherman online and have admired her gorgeous copper cuffs she posts on a weekly basis.  When I found out she was teaching at Bead & Button Show, I had to squeeze in one her classes.  I'm so excited to take her Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder Copper Ring class.  I wear so many copper jewelry but don't have a copper ring yet so it will be a great compliment to other copper jewelry.  So looking forward to meeting her in person!

My final class is Wire-Woven Filigree Ring with Kaska Firor.  I love the look for wire weaved jewelry and the ring caught my eyes!  I hope I have the patience in weaving intricate designs.  Looks so tedious!

REBRANDING!
I've decided to brand myself and change my jewelry design business to Kumi Fisher Designs!  I had sentimental attachment to Malie Kai as they were my children's middle names but a difficult name to remember, spell, or pronounce is not good for business.  I finally feel more confident branding myself as I go through this creative journey.  Finding your creative voice and brand wasn't an easy process and I'm still learning and growing.  Events like Bead & Button Show has really helped me find my creative voice.  Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new friends.

I will have exciting news when I come back from Milwaukee.

Mahalo for being part of my creative journey!

Art Jewelry Elements Earring Challenge Reveal #4!

I fell in love with Marti Conrad's ceramic paw print beads and decided to feature them for Week #7 Earring Challenge.  We rescued our standard poodle Kea (means white in Hawaiian) 12 years ago when she was about 1 1/2 yrs old.  She has turned out to be the best dog I've ever had and brought so much joy to our family.  She's slowed down quite a bit and we both share aching joints but still has lots of love to share :)

I cut out copper rings using my trusted Swanstrom Disc Cutter, hammered and stamped "rescued" and "loved" with the paw print charms wire wrapped at the bottom.  You can find more about Marti on Marti's Buttons n Beads Facebook page or follow her on Pinterest.  You can shop for Marti's ceramic creations at her Etsy store.

For Week #8 I decided to use some of the metal etching technique I learned last year from the fabulous duo - Gail Lannum and Cristina Leonard - at Bead and Button Show in 2012.  They are once again offering the Metal Etching class twice this year.  Go find out more about their classes here!

What I love about metal etching is you can apply any design and it's quick and easy!  I finished the earrings by wire wrapping large hole freshwater pearls.  I think I'm going to make a variation of this design.  So many possibilities and so little time!!

Here is my sweet fur child Kea.  She sends lots of Aloha your way!  Mahalo for visiting and hop on over to all the other creative artists below!

Happy New Year 2013!

Been away with the fam for ski vacation to Snowmass, CO and away from the studio for 2 weeks.  After the mad fury of the holiday season, it actually felt good to take a break.

I started off 2013 posting about Goal Setting on Artisan Whimsy for the Enameling Team.  I wrote down my goals for 2013 on my iPhone and will be tracking my progress throughout the year.

While on vacation I was catching up on my favorite blogs and came across Art Jewelry Elements Earring Challenge.  The first sentence immediately caught my attention-"Do you need a kick start for your creativity in 2013?"  Yes I do!  I was lucky enough to be one of the first 50 to sign up where we will be pinning new earrings on a weekly basis for 13 weeks.  You can see all the wonderful work by so many talented people on AJE Pinterest Board.  Mahalo AJE Team to get me off to a great start!

January 8th was a nerve wrecking day as it was the first day of Bead & Button Show sign up for classes/workshops.  I put in for one of the Master's Class by Linda Darty but unfortunately I wasn't chosen by the lottery.  I had a solid back up plan and successfully signed up for 12 classes!  Yes, I'm crazy taking 12 classes in 7 days!  Super excited to be taking classes from Richard Salley, Robyn Cornelius, Thomas Mann, Joe Silvera, Sherry Serafini, Chris Mode, Eva Sherman, Kaska Firor, and Susan Wade.   This year my dear friend Julie won't be joining me but Heidi is going to be my partner in crime.  I'm so excited to show her what I've been talking about the past couple of years!  The biggest surprise came when I was stuck at San Francisco airport for a 4 hour layover.  I decided to check out how the classes were filling out and if they've added more seats on two of the classes I didn't get in.  I noticed they added another session for Linda Darty's Master Class.  I was already on the wait list so I was accepted in!  This was the icing on the cake!  So much to look forward to and June can't come quick enough!  We are so going to enjoy the Wisconsin Butter Burger together Heidi!!

Today was my first day back into my studio.  My best friend's hubby made me the most incredible gift-Jeweler's Bench!  I cried when I got it.  It will be cherished for the rest of my life.  With the help of my hubby we got it nicely tucked into my studio!

The biggest change was the height of the bench.  It allowed me to work for hours without hunching over allowing me to pound, saw, dap, etc. without neck and shoulder pains.  The bench will be one of my prized possession!

With the proper work bench it was such a breeze to make some of the things that's been in my head.  Being deprived of pounding on metals for couple of weeks I decided to start the Art Jewelry Elements Earring Challenge with this Fold Formed Leaves Earrings :)  Boy did it feel good to make some noise again in the studio!

Here I come 2013!  Let the fun begin!  Mahalo for stopping by!

Bead & Button Show 2012 Recap

Just got home from Bead & Button Show and what an exhilarating experience it was!  I signed up for 10 classes this year.  It was a crazy schedule with three days of back to back day and night classes but I had to pack in as much as I can while I was there and it was so worth it!

Here is the recap of B&B 2012!
Day 1~Painting with Fire with Barbara Lewis
From the moment I met Barbara I knew I made the right choice to sign up for two of her classes this year.  I've been admiring her work for several years on various magazines, watched her video, read her book from cover to cover so I felt as though I was meeting a celebrity!  Her husband, Jim, and assistant Chris were such huge help during the two workshops not to mention how warm and skillful they were.  It was a full class and the three of them did an incredible job being attentive to all the students.  The immersion method is truly amazing.  Talk about instant gratification.  You can literally make beautifully enameled beads in minutes! The Painting with Fire workshop gave me the solid foundation for the immersion method.  Look at all the beads I made during class!

Day 2~Balance Beam Bracelet with Richard Salley
I took Richard's class last year at B&B and really loved his relaxed zen like teaching style.  I wanted to build a solid foundation in soldering and I so appreciated learning the technique from Richard.  His lovely assistant Martina Stein was there too.  She just has such a calming spirit and such a talented jewelry artist.  The two of them make such a perfect teaching duo!

The bracelet required 12 soldering points so it was a great way to dive in and learn the technique.  I was so happy I took this class with my dear friend Julie as we kept telling each other how we couldn't believe we were making this bracelet.  Everyone in class made beautiful bracelets and lots of oooohs and ahhhhs were going on at the end of the class.  Just another reminder not to limit what you can accomplish.  With great teachers like Richard, he makes your dream come true!  See you next year Richard and Martina as I'll be signing up for another class for sure!

Day 2 Night Class~Soldering a Copper Bezel with Kim St. Jean
I decided to take advantage of evening classes this year and signed up at a chance to take a class with Kim St. Jean.  It's great to learn the same technique from multiple teachers as inevitably they all have something different to share.  Soldering paste was used for this class which works totally different than solder sheets and wire.  It was so great to see different method and how to use different materials.  I'm used to working with PMC/Art Clay syringe and I was way too stingy in applying the solder paste to my bezel.  Kim finally came over and squeezed a very generous amount of paste and it flowed like a charm.  Note to self...apply more solder paste.  Working with thin copper bezel allowed us to bezel interesting shapes.  I originally picked out a rectangle turquoise but changed it to ammonites to challenge myself during class.  It was a great experience working with odd shapes.  I learned lots of great tips from Kim during the 3 hr class :)

Day 3~Micro Macrame with Joan Babcock
I was really into macrame back in the day but I couldn't remember a single knot (I guess it shows how long ago that was lol!).  When I saw Joan's work, I was so intrigued how she incorporated cords, beads, and wire into her work. But I just couldn't figure out how to do the different steps by reading her book.  I learn best from demonstration.  This class was such a nice change from my usual working with metal and I actually found myself enjoying a quiet soothing class working with threads and seed beads :) It was the most quiet class I took this year lol!   I bought several kits, her book and DVD so I can continue to learn and incorporate macrame into my work.  Joan and her husband Jeff were so sweet and helpful and patiently taught us through the multiple steps.  There are so many color cords to choose from and I quickly added them on my shopping list :)  Joan will be soon offering online classes on her Website and I will definitely be .  As you can see I still need to finish this bracelet but I can see myself doing micro macrame projects while watching TV.

Day 4~"Soar" Surface Decoration for Enameling with Barbara Lewis
This was a 2nd class with Barbara and boy was I glad I took her Painting with Fire class first.  It really made a huge difference working with multiple shapes of the birdhouse.  I finally figured out how to get better coverage to the area around the mandrel near my hand.  My dear friend Julie and I sat right next to each other and we had a great time as usual.  I originally intended to have the main part of the birdhouse in cobalt blue with millefiori flowers around it but it ended up with specks and the millefiori flowers just turned ugly brown :(  I hate it when your original idea doesn't turn out the way you planned and I had to figure out how to make it work.  So I decided to coat it with layers of white and aqua.  Now with multiple layers of enamels, I used another mandrel and twisted the molten glass to get a unique effect.  I told Julie that this is either going to turn out to be the ugliest piece or surprising beauty.  When the glass cooled I was so happy with the result!  The great thing about working with enamel is you can always coat another layer if you are not happy with what you see :)  Just love working with forgiving materials!  It was a bit tricky putting fusing the floor, body of the birdhouse and the roof together.  We used Eugenia Chan's torching basket for that final process.  It's a must have tool and you can get it from Barbara's Website

Day 4 Night Class~Hand Stamped Spinner Ring with Chris Mode
I wanted to take this class last year but it sold out super fast.  I signed up within the first couple of minutes when the online registration opened and it was one of the first sold out classes this year.  Even though it's a 3 hour class, Chris was so organized and clearly explained the step by step process so I was able to finish this ring and had 30 minutes to spare.  It was a bit tricky to get the base ring aligned perfectly to be soldered but with a little help, the solder flowed so nicely.  I have so many design ideas in my head, I can't wait to start making these rings!

Day 5~Hinged Treasure Boxes by Linda Larsen
Hinges can add movement, flexibility, and design element that simply can't be accomplish with a flat sheet of metal.  So when I saw Linda offering this class I jumped on the opportunity.  It was a full class and the time flew by quick.  I didn't get to finish the piece but I learned the step by step techniques.  Linda shared a great tip on using your thumb nail as a guide when you start sawing.  I always had a hard time to get the blade make that first cut and this made sawing so much easier to start.  She had many wonderful pieces on display and I just love the way her work looks.  I still need to attach the top part to the box on the bottom, thread the bail, and attach the necklace.  We used mica as the little window which was sandwiched between the two metal sheets and all three were riveted together.  Now I need to decide what treasure to put inside the box which will peak through the window.  What a fun piece to wear when it's all done.  I'll have to make it a point not to add this project on the ever growing "I'll finish that later" pile...  Linda is a fun and energetic teacher and she will keep you moving through the class.  I also had a great time sitting next to my new friend Lucie from Calgary during this class!

Day 5 Night Class~Metal Etching 101 with Cristina Leonard and Gail Lannum
I've been admiring etched metal for sometime and been wanting to try it but I was timid using ferric chloride so when I saw this class being offered at B&B, it was a perfect timing!  The class was taught by Cristina Leonard and Gail Lannum.  They are two great ladies who kept the class fun and informative.  We learned how to use both the PnP sheet and Sharpie Markers to create the resists.  Each copper were in the etching solution for about 45 minutes and created beautiful images.  Since I don't have a rolling mill (yet), this will be a great way to add designs and texture to metal sheets I use.  The possibilities are endless as you can basically etch any image even photos by using Photoshop.  Cristina and Gail are both talented artists.  It was so nice to be in their first B&B class.  I look forward to seeing what they will be teaching next year :)

Meet the Teachers Event
This is a must attend event at Bead & Button Show!  All the teachers showcasing their work and kits for sale.  I can't imagine a more exciting place to be!  If you want first dibs, come early as you can see the long line to the event.  The place was buzzing with students interacting with teachers.  I purposely avoided getting any seed bead kits this year as I still had some from last year and focused on metal and wire related kits.  It's also a great way to see the classes you may have missed and buy kits, or meet the teachers you may want to take classes from in the future.   It was a long but happy day and many of us left the event with bags of goodies :)

Day 6~Engraved Tapestry Bracelet with Melissa Cable
I took Melissa's class last year at Bead & Button simply because I was fascinated with a material I never heard of called Faux Bone.  When I found out what a great teacher she is, I kept a close eye on what she was going to offer this year and this class was one of my top choices.  Her classes are well organized with handouts with lots of information and she is so attentive.  Faux Bone was developed by Robert Dansik which is a non-toxic PVP which can be heated to form any shape.  It's truly a versatile material and you can use many medium to color it.  I originally cringed at the thought of engraving as I have such a hard time engraving on metal.  The engraver dances all over the metal and I can never get a clean design or lettering let alone intricate designs.  When Melissa told me I'm going to love engraving on Faux Bone, I was skeptical but once I started I was amazed how easy it was!  Everyone in the class had such amazing designs.  She introduced the Frame Flaring Tool which was used to make the bezel and so glad I reserved them during Meet the Teachers as they were sold out by the beginning of this class.
I'm looking forward to what she will be offering next year as she is truly one of my favorite teachers :)

Private Preview Shopping!
I was so much prepared this year for this shopping event.  I had address labels with my name, address, phone number, business license number and copies of my business license.  So many vendors appreciated this so they didn't have to write my information on the invoices.  I also made a list and tried to get to them first.  My first stop was Humblebeads and Heather Powers had so many beautiful beads!  Once I got my stash from Heather, I bought beads and cords to compliment them.  I really wanted to get a bunch of chains but decided to just write down the item numbers and order online as I knew I was close to the weight limit with all the new tools I already bought.  I was there until the closing announcement at 9pm and still had 1/3 of the floor to go.  Finished the rest of the vendors after the last class the following day.  With over 300 vendors, this is truly a beaders/jewelers heaven!

Day 7~Pierced and Stacked Pendant with Julie Sanford
One of my goals this year was to tackle my apprehension about using the jewelry saw.  I was definitely intimidated by this class but Julie has a gentle way of showing the techniques and step by step instructions.  I also contacted her prior to class via e-mail about the jewelry saw and she responded in great detail.  Once I got the rhythm going, I actually enjoyed sawing metal.  I put my headset on and listened to my favorite playlist and sawed out the entire design in one sitting.  I never thought I would say this but it was very relaxing listening to the sawing sound.  This was definitely another milestone reached :)

After the shopping floor closed I went to the Miller Pub at the bottom of the Hilton and ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup.  It was soooooooo good and I'm definitely ordering that again next year!  I managed to pack away all the goodies and went to bed with a big smile.  What an amazing week.  My experience this year was better than last year.  May be because I was more familiar with where to go and felt more comfortable.  I also saw many friends from last year and made many more new friends.  I had great teachers and creative fellow students.  My roommate Julie was icing on the cake!  It was so nice to share the day's event with someone at night.  It just wouldn't have been the same without her.

Mahalo Bead & Button Show!  You have once again made my dream come true :)

Milwaukee you were so good to me once again.  I will see you next year!

Bead & Button Registered!

Arrived in Milwaukee and right after I dropped off my luggage in the hotel room I went straight to the registration desk at the Hyatt. Hardly anyone was there and I leisurely picked up my goodie bag and browsed the two vendors near by without nobody else around. Knowing how busy it's going to get at the registration area, I was happy I came early.

After I did a little shopping at Knots Just Beads, I decided to get something to eat at the Miller Pub at the Hilton. This is what I indulged to kick start B&B. Wisconsin Butter Burger!

I rolled back to my room to see what's in the goodie bag. I love the tiny Wubber chain nose pliers!

Need to go to bed so I can be rested for tomorrow!

Bucket List ~ Bead & Button Show

Bead & Button Show is less than a week away and I'm receiving e-mails from all the instructors regarding the classes I've signed up.  Such an exciting time with so much anticipation!  This is the third beading/jewelry making retreat/workshop I've signed up for and I have to say I'm more prepared attending the Bead & Button Show this year for the 2nd time.  Living on Kauai I've had to rely on learning techniques from DVD, online classes, and books.  While there are some awesome resources available, nothing can replace the hands on instructions you get from attending workshops/classes from fabulous instructors.

When I first saw the line up of instructors at the Weekend with Wiremasters in 2010, I signed up to take my jewelry making skills to the next level.  Sharilyn Miller, Mary Hettmansperger, Tracey Stanley, and Janice Berkbile-Thank you!   It was the best thing I've done to stretch my skills and knowledge and met lifelong friends with commonality that you simply can't replace.  So glad to have met you Heidi and Julie!

After such a positive experience at Weekend with Wiremasters 2010, I put Bead & Button Show on my bucket list.  Something I will attend some day.  Then when our best man in my wedding unexpectedly passed away from cancer end of 2010.  I came face to face with reality of life.  I decided to make some day to today.  I signed up for Bead & Button Show 2011 and my dear friend Julie whom I met at Wiremasters decided to join me.  We shared a room at the Hilton and compared notes each night of the classes we each took.  We had such a good time last year so we are rommies again this year.  The experience of being surrounded with so many creative artists was simply amazing.  I also ran into Sheri from Wiremasters during registration.  I was so fortunate to have shared drinks, dinners, and laughters with her again.  At the time I didn't know her life would be taken away so suddenly early in 2012 and I would never see her again.

I read couple of Blog posts on how to prepare for attending bead shows.  Lori Anderson who hosts the fabulous Bead Soup Party wrote a great article about Going to a Bead Show-How to Prepare!  I printed the labels with my info and added it to my list of things to bring!  Then another great post by Art Bead Scene about Bead Show Shopping Tips.  I mapped out my shopping plan.  Two great posts and I'm ready to go!

So here are my two cents...
Don't just make a wishful bucket list, start living your bucket list rather than adding it on a piece of paper.  You never know when your number is up.  Follow your passion and your heart.  I'm so grateful I have a creative outlet to balance my life.  Not everyone can say they have a passion in life.  If making beautiful jewelry is what brings joy to your life, then welcome to my journey.  We are the lucky ones.

Live Love Laugh
From the Heart,
Kumi

Meet the Teacher ~ Julie Sanford

Julie Sanford

One of the techniques I haven't challenged myself is working with jewelry saw.   It will be a bit intimidating to take this class as I truly suck with the jewelry saw!  Last time I tried I must have broken half dozen blades.

Julie Sanford teaches in her studio in Michigan and her work is amazing!  Looking forward to learning sawing and metal fabrication from the expert at Bead & Button.

It was great reading about her on May 2012 issue of Crafts Report.  You can see more of her beautiful work and find out more about Julie at Julie Sanford Designs Website!

Meet the Teacher ~ Chris Mode

Chris Mode

I actually wanted to take Chris' Hand Stamped Spinner Ring class last year at Bead & Button but didn't have time so I made sure I signed up for this class the first day it opened.  This was one of the first classes to sell out the day it opened so really glad I was ready by the computer!

Chris is one busy person. Her company Creative Mode started out as a rubber stamp company then added glass beads and jewelry. She recently purchased a 120 year old water paint company. Check out more details from Chris' Creative Mode Website. It's going to be great learning from an artist with such creative and business background!

Meet the Teachers ~ Cristina Leonard & Gail Lannum

Cristina Leonard & Gail Lannum

I've been seeing so many beautifully etched copper and brass lately and had to get on the bandwagon! By learning metal etching I will be able to transfer so many gorgeous designs onto metal and use it for so many components.  Possibilities are endless!  I found Gail's blog while searching for Bead & Button Show last year and fell in love with her work.  This will be Cristina and Gail's first teaching experience at B&B and I'm so excited to be taking their first class!
Check out Cristina Leonard's Website which showcases her beautiful work and Gail Lannum's Blog which is so much fun to read!  Looking forward to meeting these two talented and fun ladies at Bead & Button!

Meet the Teacher ~ Melissa Cable

Melissa Cable

Last year I took Melissa Cable's Wisteria Pendant class as I was intrigued by a material I was not familiar with.  Melissa was teaching several classes using Faux Bone which was developed by Robert Dancik.  You can find out more about Faux Bone on Robert Dancik's Website  This unique material is amazing.  You can shape it by applying a heat gun and apply colors with alcohol ink, acrylic paints and even shoe polish!  There are so many possibilities on how you can use this material.

When I saw Melissa offering this Tapestry Bracelet class this year I was in love!  She is such a sweet person and will patiently walk you through the steps in creating beautiful jewelry.  Check out her book Spotlight on Wire and find other goodies at Melissa's Website.  Come discover the world of Faux Bone!

Meet the Teacher ~ Linda Larsen

Linda Larsen

I fell in love with Linda Larsen's work and have been following her blog Objects and Elements.  Linda's Website is full of tools and supplies to stock up your studio!  Her Tabbed Fossil Coral Pendant with great step-by-step instruction was featured on Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist Magazine Jan-Feb 2012 issue.
Looking forward to meeting Linda in person and take her Hinged Treasure Boxes class at Bead & Button Show in June!

Meet the Teacher ~ Joan Babcock

Joan Babcock

I was so into macrame back in the 80's.  Yes I just aged myself.  So when my dear friend Heidi and I saw micro macrame jewelry while strolling through Main Street in Park City, I just had to learn how to incorporate the blast from the past techniques into my work.  Joan's work is amazing!  She uses the same knotting method and applies it towards jewelry construction.  I really want to incorporate more fiber (and I don't mean the ones you digest!) and this class will teach me how to add a different medium into my work.
Joan has two books that I know of:  Micro-Macramé Jewelry: Tips and Techniques for Knotting with Beads and Wired Micro-Macramé Jewelry: Enhancing Fiber Designs with Wire.

Here is a excerpt from Joan's DVD

Check out Joan's Website and you will have a totally different impression about macrame.  I'm looking forward to learning from the master of micro macrame at Bead & Button Show!

Meet the Teacher ~ Kim St. Jean

Kim St. Jean

I've been wanting to take Kim's class since I bought her fabulous book Mixed Metal Mania.  I also took her Fold Forming online class at Beaducation and loved it!  I highly recommend both the book and her classes at Beaducation.  Kim's Simple Hammered Clasp Class is how I learned how to make my own clasp using wire with leather cord and it's free!

Here is an intro clip by Beaducation about Kim St. Jean.

Since I work a lot with copper, learning how to solder with copper and bezel setting is a must on my list this year.  Find out more about Kim's work and teaching schedule on Kim's Website.  I've learned so much from her book and online classes and can't wait to take her class in person at Bead & Button!

Meet the Teacher ~ Richard Salley

Richard Salley

I took Richard Salley's torch fire enameling class last year at Bead & Button Show and loved every moment.  I had no idea torch fire enameling was so fun and easy.  It's a really forgiving technique and if you don't like the piece after firing, sift some more and fire again.  A lot of my favorite pieces were a result of multiple firings.

I also love Richard's unique and distinguished jewelry designs.  This year I wanted to learn soldering and bezel setting and this class was perfect. Richard's Website features his work from 2005 and it's a collection of gorgeous designs.  You will also find great tutorials and all the workshops you can find him.  If you have an opportunity to take one of his classes, I highly recommend it!

Meet the Teacher ~ Barbara Lewis

I truly value how much I learn from taking classes.  Personally I can only do so much from reading books and watching online videos.  I will be going to Bead & Button Show for the 2nd time and wanted to feature the fabulous teachers/artists I will be taking classes from!

Barbara Lewis with Painting with Fire

I am so excited to finally take Barbara's class to learn the immersion torch fire enameling method! I've been a huge fan of Barbara Lewis ever since I saw her work on Belle Armoire Jewelry Magazine.  Her book Torch-Fired Enamel Jewelry was the Best Craft Book of 2011 at Amazon and I have read it from cover to cover multiple times.  Barbara also hosts Painting with Fire Ning which is a wonderful and supportive torch enameling community.  I've met so many wonderful artists and great friends on that site.   If you are remotely interested in torch fire enameling, I highly recommend getting her book and join the Ning group. She just moved and opened her new studio in St. Petersburg, Florida. Barbara teaches the immersion technique which is different from sifting enameling on top of copper.  She is an incredibly supportive and talented artist who shares her knowledge.  For those of you who can't make the trek to St. Pete or other venues she teaches, she is offering a 2nd e-course this summer.  Check out the details about her e-course on her Painting with Fire Website!  You can also follow her blog at http://paintingwithfireartwear.blogspot.com/

Here is a video of the immersion method that Barbara teaches.

I'm also taking Barbara's Surface Decoration for Enamel class while at B&B.  I just couldn't resist learning how to make those cute enameled birdhouses!

I'm sooooo looking forward to meeting Barbara in person!
